Looking for a Date: Veritas Masquerade, January 17th

There's something about a masquerade that changes everything. The way anonymity gives you permission. The way a really good mask makes you braver than you've ever been. Veritas is hosting their masquerade party on January 17th, and I need a date.

Let me tell you why this matters.

Back in February 2015, long before I started doing this work, I went to my first SNCTM party, their Valentine's masquerade. They took your phone at the door. No photos, no videos, complete discretion. Instead of cameras, they hired illustrators to sketch the scenes unfolding around the room, turning the evening into something between memory and art.

I wore this ornate horned mask I'd gotten for my birthday the year before. Custom made, commanding. Everyone else wore delicate lace or traditional black masks, elegant, beautiful, safe. I looked dangerous. And I went alone.

That mask gave me confidence I didn't know I had. I spent the entire night as a voyeur, moving from room to room, watching different scenes unfold. Couples. Groups. Eyes watching eyes watching. I was fascinated by the intimacy of it all, the permission everyone seemed to give themselves once their faces disappeared behind silk and feathers. By the end of the night, I knew two things: I had to come back, and next time I wouldn't just watch.

Four years passed before I returned. 2019, with a friend and her husband. By then, SNCTM had evolved. They'd added performances, elaborate, theatrical, unlike anything I'd ever seen. The moment I walked through those doors, I felt my heart racing, my body warming up. It was intoxicating.

We went for cocktails first. At the bar, we met a masked stranger, tall, nicely built, easy to talk to. We flirted. One thing turned into another the way these things do when everyone understands the rules without saying them out loud. Before I knew it, we were all tangled up together with people standing around us, watching. It was the most exhilarating experience of my life.

I haven't been back since. Life got busy, the world shut down, priorities shifted the way they do. But the invitation for Veritas landed in my inbox a few days ago, and I can't stop thinking about it. Their masquerade is on January 17th. It feels like a dare.

Here's what I want: someone who understands what makes an evening like this extraordinary. Someone who can hold a real conversation over cocktails and read the room when words stop mattering. Someone who knows the difference between watching and participating, and more importantly, when to do which. Someone who won't hesitate when I lean in and whisper, "Let's go."

If you've been thinking about reaching out, if you've been waiting for the right moment, this is it. I'm selective about my time, and I don't do this often. But when it's right, it's unforgettable.

Let's make this interesting.
