New year. Three cities. One already claimed. Don't be late on the others.

I don't do resolutions.

I spent New Year's Eve at my sister's place. There was a chili cook-off, she went all out. It was raining, so we stayed inside, which meant her house turned into this beautiful chaos of too many people, too much food, someone's guitar. There was karaoke. I did Selena's "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" and committed fully to it. My dogs were there stealing bites of chili. I brought my new digital camcorder that shoots like Super 8 film, so now I have all this grainy footage of people I love being ridiculous.

The rain made it perfect. Everyone stayed late because no one wanted to drive home in it. We ended up dancing in her living room until way too late.

Today the rain finally stopped. Woke up to bright sun, that clean feeling after days of grey. I took a walk around the reservoir this afternoon, the kind of walk where you're not trying to get anywhere, just moving. Everything felt quiet and new.

That's what I want more of this year: moments that feel real while they're happening. Less performance, more presence. That's the only metric that matters.

I'm reading The Lover again. Duras has this line: "Very early in my life it was too late." I think about that every time someone tells me they'll reach out "when the timing's better." The timing is never better. It's just now or not now. I made a playlist from that night. Air to Selena to LCD Soundsystem to Frank Ocean, the full arc from dancing in the living room to 3am and no one leaving.

I know you're thinking about it. You've probably been thinking about it for a while. So here's my question: what happens if you just stop thinking and actually do it?
